SIG Wireless: Are App Stores and Device Specific Apps. Passe? Implications for Mobile Market, Development and you?
As companies weigh the cost of developing device specific applications, the talk is that the Mobile Web would be the way to move forward, that mobile app stores were passe, that it is too costly for even large companies to do custom apps. for multiple platforms. What are the implications of this for developers? What are the short term investment vs. long term investment trade-offs? If it is an appstore, then what do developers bet on device specific app stores or open app stores? If app stores are to be the vehicle, how do they need to evolve from where they are at? What are the metrics that developers need to be thinking through? What are the device platforms that people should be betting on? etc.
