"How to Create a Great LinkedIn Profile: Impress recruiters, Find Your Next Job, and Strengthen Your Brand"

Long gone are the days when your resume ruled as your single most important job search asset. Today your Linkedin profile is critical in achieving multiple goals: generating inbound career opportunities for yourself or your business, being your public online face when you're doing a job search, and playing an integral role in your personal branding.

Many recruiters now use Linkedin as their first screening of potential candidates and won't even contact you to speak with you or ask to see your resume unless they're impressed by your Linkedin profile. Plus, recruiters don't read Linkedin profiles, they scan them. In this interactive workshop Mark Andersen will teach multiple techniques for making sure your profile passes the quick scan test of a recruiter, so you can hear about that next great career opportunity.

Mark Andersen is the Founder/CEO of CareerNav (www.CareerNav.com), a leading career coaching company based in San Francisco. Mark recently gave his "How to be a Fast Tracker" presentation at TiE to a full house. He has over 1,100 connections on Linkedin and landed his last VP of Marketing job by first receiving an inbound inquiry via Linkedin from an executive recruiter he didn't know at the time.

In this presentation, Mark will also cover topics like "How does Linkedin's search algorithm work?" Linkedin protects its search algorithm like a state secret, so nobody outside of Linkedin knows for sure how their algorithm works and it's always changing. Nonetheless, there are best search practices to optimizing your profile that you can implement. We'll also cover profile changes you can test to see what increases the number of searches you come up in and your view-throughs.

By taking this highly interactive workshop you will learn ways to:
  • Create a great Linkedin profile that gets positive responses from recruiters and companies
  • Strengthen your personal branding: is your profile clearly and compellingly communicating your brand? You'll find out during this workshop because your fellow participants will give you feedback
  • Optimize ("SEO") your profile: keyword selection, natural use of keywords, connections, groups...
  • Avoid the cardinal sins of bad profile writing such as "Keyword stuffing"
  • Test changes in your profile to increase your search results
  • Understand what the new "Skills and Expertise Endorsements" feature means for you and how best to give and receive endorsements
Please note that for parts of this workshop you will work in small groups so you can get live feedback on your current Linkedin profile to understand how it is perceived by others. Is it adding or subtracting to your personal brand? Is it compelling enough for recruiters to contact you? Is it well written and clear or is it confusing people?

Please bring your tablet or laptop in order to be able to show your Linkedin profile to others and review other Linkedin profiles. Don't worry if you can't bring your tablet or laptop--you can use your smart phone instead. Either way you'll walk out of this workshop with a stronger Linkedin profile.
